WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee today voted 12-11 to advance Linda McMahon’s nomination to serve as President Donald Trump’s secretary of education. The vote moves her nomination to the full Senate for consideration.
Nadine Chabrier, senior policy counsel at the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL), made the following statement:
Dismantling the department would roll back decades of progress in educational equity, leaving national policies, accountability measures and financial aid programs fragmented and inconsistent across states. It would also disrupt federal student aid and loan repayment programs, making higher education even more financially burdensome for vulnerable students.
We urge McMahon, if confirmed, to preserve and strengthen existing vital programs such as Pell Grants for low-income college students and the SAVE income-driven repayment plan for student loans. These programs ensure that all borrowers have access to quality education and the financial support necessary to succeed.
The future of our nation’s education system and the well-being of millions of students are at stake. Our leaders must prioritize policies that promote affordability, accessibility and opportunity for all.
